A Quarantine Area has been declared in Perth’s southern suburbs to support efforts to eradicate Queensland fruit fly (Qfly). The Qfly is considered one of the world's worst fruit pests, attacking a wide range of fruits, vegetables, like and even ornamental plants apple, avocado, capsicum, tomato, chilli, kiwifruit, mango, nectarine, papaya, passionfruit, and peach.
The move comes after Qfly was detected in Willagee and Palmyra by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s (DPIRD’s) early detection surveillance trapping grid.
Suburbs affected stretch from Bicton in the north, Hilton and East Fremantle in the west, Booragoon and Bull Creek in the east to Coolbellup in the south and all suburbs in between.
