How We All Helped
44 volunteers helped map out the infestation of PSHB in Perth's Hyde Park

What a great day!
ArbWest, City of Vincent and DPIRD, jointly ran an event over the weekend to try and understand a little more about the movements of the little borer that's causing havoc within our tree care industry at the moment. ArbWest put out a rallying call among our industry members, for as many personnel possible, to help run the event in Hyde Park at 06:45 am on the 10th August. Industry answered. We had 24 climbers and the same number in ground staff, all working together to make the event run like clockwork.

How we did it
The objective was to climb up into the trees, locate and paint as many borer entry and exit holes as possible with a white latex paint, and flag the location on the limb with Fluro surveyors tape. The tree canopy was divided up into quadrants, so by the time the climber had finished his section, he would rotate clockwise and check the flagged holes, the previous climber had painted. Given the white latex paint takes only minutes to dry, it was evident that the trees were actively infested by the number of emergent beetles through the paint.

150 year old trees
DPIRD were onsite answering questions from concerned local residents about the potential to lose so many trees, the area is one of Perth's most iconic locations with 150 year old trees.
The high profile recreational area called for a seamless event, the collaboration between City of Vincent (Sarah) and ArbWest (Joe ) made it just that.
Next event 17th August
The professionalism and camaraderie shown by our industry never ceases to amaze, a big thank you to all who answered the call, but there's still more. We have one more date to add to this event, this coming Saturday 17th August, 06:45 am, same place, same modus operandi.
